Deflection during composite design

Deflection during composite design

CSI Software uses a moment-area technique to calculate deflection during composite design. For common cases in which beams exhibit composite behavior, this method is effective.

However, when beams deflect upward under conditions of double- or triple-curvature (with tension along the top fiber), behavior may not be composite. In such cases, use either of the following methods:

  • Steel-frame beam design post-processor.
  • Check such members manually.

Complete details are available via Help>documentation>composite frame design

The following deflection results are available:

Pre-composite= Deflection due to self-weight DEAD load using  moment of Inertia of bare steel section

Post-composite = Deflection due to SDL and LIVE load only using Transformed moment of inertia

Live Load = Deflection due to LIVE load using Transformed moment of inertia

Total Deflection = Deflection due to DEAD +LIVE +SDL load using Transformed moment of inertia

Note: For the deflections above to be calculated correctly the program needs to trace load types correctly ; therefore, do not use load cases  that contain two or more load types and/or combinations that contain other combinations.

Camber in the program is calculated based on design preferences, via Design>composite beam design>preferences, refer to camber Tab
